The month of February is the month of the heart as we all know so well from Valentine’ Day. February is not just about romantic love, it is about the health of our heart and self love. For me it reminds me to thank my heart for keeping me alive. I am also aware of the magnificent intelligence of the heart in the functioning of my body mind and spirit. Extensive research done at by the HeartMath™ Institute, HeartMath.com , shows that our hearts have a greater intelligence than our brains. It is from the messages of our heart ie emotions that gives our brain instantaneous signals to which chemicals and hormones are released moment by moment.
Doctors have studied the effects of emotions through electrocardiography and bio-feedback which include heart rate variability patterns. There now is significant evidence documenting how emotions, fueled by our perceptions and feelings, affect us and stem from our heart center. The research done by the HeartMath™ Institute has focused on how our feelings affect the information contained in the heart’s electromagnetic signal.
When we have emotions like stress, frustration, or sadness, the frequency of the heart’s rhythmic pattern becomes “incoherent” and sends out an incoherent signal, shifting the body into “fight or flight because there is danger lurking” response. The cascade of stress chemicals comes from the heart’s signaling something is wrong. What is wrong is that our heart is not open. We are in judgment, fear, anger, or hurt.
Taking care of our heart starts by taking care of ourselves. We often can take care of ourselves by doing simple thing. Taking a few minutes of quiet, eating a healthy meal, forgiving ourselves for a bad choice, or congratulating ourselves on a job well done protects our physical and spiritual hearts.
A simple way to connect with your heart is to first close your eyes. Breathe deeply for a few minutes and then breathe “through your heart space”. Notice how you start to feel. You can place your hands across your chest, right in the middle and feel the comfort of your hands resting there as you breathe through your heart.
